Remembering Fred Herfst

On July 7, 2019, with his wife and children by his side, Fred Herfst passed away and is now with his Lord and Savior.

Many of you will know of Fred and his work in Christian Education both as a former principal of SCS (FVCHS) and as Executive Director of FISA.  Our thoughts are with his family as they both grieve his loss and celebrate his life.

He was born July 20, 1942, in Halfweg, the Netherlands, and was the oldest of 7 children born to Ahlrich Herfst and Nancy Oostwouder. The family immigrated to Chatham, Ontario in 1948. In 1968 Fred moved to B.C. He was a loving husband, father and Opa and is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann; his 3 children: Monique (Ted) VanderWart, Richard (Marie) Herfst, Dennis (Theresa) Herfst & his 10 grandchildren. Fred was a man of integrity and wisdom, calm, fair, thoughtful, and humble, who served his Lord all his life – in his family, in his church, and in his work in education. His work as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal for 20 years was followed by 25 years as the Executive Director of FISA, promoting parental choice in education in the province. He also volunteered his time in committees for the local and wider church and school boards.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 20, 2019, at 2 p.m. in the New West Christian Reformed Church, 8255-13th Ave., Burnaby.
