“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all of creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:15-17 (NIV)
Mathematics is an important part of our world. As humans, we are created with an innate desire to understand the world around us. Mathematics is a language that we can use to describe and understand creation as God reveals himself to us through its beauty and order. Our goal in the SCS Secondary Math Department is to teach math from a Christian perspective in order to equip students with both the knowledge and skills for higher learning and future vocations while giving them the opportunity to appreciate and engage creation on a higher level.
Educating for wholeness in mathematics means students will be involved in a wide range of learning activities. We offer all available streams of curriculum, with up to 3 choices of courses at the senior level. Our teachers believe traditional skill-building activities are important but that hands-on activities, individual and group projects, presentations, contests, and technology should also be used when unfolding concepts in order to provide a more holistic approach to mathematics learning.
