Physical Education at Surrey Christian is focused student learning through movement and activity. The gym provides a unique classroom opportunity to educate for wholeness by allowing teachers to explore questions about health, teamwork, winning, and the joy of play.
At the grade 8 to 10 level we focus on team sports like soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, ultimate, and road hockey. Students engage in individual and duel activities like badminton, dance, gymnastics, weight training, fitness, wrestling and self-defence. We explore the areas of the importance of exercise for developing a healthy life style, making healthy choices in regards to drugs, nutrition, and sexuality.
At the grade 11 and 12 level we look to expose students to a variety of new activities that often happen off our school campus. Ice hockey, curling, squash, tennis, racquetball, table tennis, indoor rock climbing, swimming, first aid, and water polo are just some of these activities students have a chance to learn about.
There are 2 highlights for the students who take Physical Education in grade 11 and 12 level. The first is the leadership program where students are asked to lead their peers in a variety of activities and the wellness trip which is a 4 day canoe trip through the beautiful lakes near Powell River.
Grade 12 students who wish to explore the natural beauty of our province in more detail will want to take part in the outdoor education class called LEAD. This class provides students a chance to learn life skills while hiking, kayaking and exploring the outdoors. Class trips include numerous day hikes, snow shoeing, winter camp out, and two extended hiking trips lasting between four to five days. Students learn a variety of outdoor and leadership skills.
