There was a time, in the early days of Surrey Christian School, when walkathons were a popular way of raising funds for a good cause. In fact, Hank Vandezande (principal) in 1968 organized the first ever walkathon to raise funds for a library – they raised $11,000! (See Avenues Fall 2013, pg.22).
We’re excited to launch the 1st SCS KIDS FOR KIDS WALKATHON in support of our partner schools in Sierra Leone and Honduras. In fact walking is a good reminder to all of us, that in many parts of the world children must walk great distances to receive even a marginal education. Our partner schools are doing a wonderful job of providing Christian education for those who would otherwise not be able to access this gift. This is due in large part to the support these schools receive from Global Partners in Christian Education and the Surrey Christian School community.
On Friday, May 26 SCS students will walk a total of 10 km from school to Tynehead Park, around a 5 km trail, and back to school again. The younger students will walk a modified route. If a child asks you to pledge $2 per kilometre, and he/she completes the walk, you will be making a gift of $20 to our partner schools. With some hard work in collecting pledges and some generosity on the part of the community we estimate we could raise $25,000. That’s our goal. We encourage students to ask friends and relatives near and far for pledges giving everyone a chance to generously support this worthy cause.
