Secondary Campus

About 450 students attend grades 8-12 at the Secondary Campus which was originally founded in 1964 as Fraser Valley Christian High School.

This campus offers numerous beautiful learning spaces such as our state-of-the-art science lab, a performing arts center, industrial arts shop, learning commons, university-sized gym and professional foods lab.

With our cross-grade homerooms, provincially ranked sports teams, a robust music program, the Falcons Motor Club, Art studio and our Microsoft Certification Program, to name a few, students are sure to find community within our school family and a place to develop their individual gifts. In addition, our annual inter-cultural learning trips provide life-changing opportunities to travel to our sister schools in Honduras, Sierra Leone, Guatemala, and northern BC.

We invite you to visit and discover all the wonderful opportunities that exist for your child at our Secondary Campus.

“My deep hope is that the staff and student community at SCS continue to grow and live into our mission statement, Educating for Wholeness by Engaging God’s World in the Servant Way of Jesus. It is worthy of my time, it is worthy of our students’ time and it is worthwhile goal to pursue.”

Program Highlights

Academics

Each course offered at the Secondary Campus is anchored in the belief that our whole world belongs to God. We strive to equip each student with a clear understanding of God’s vision for how to serve him and all of creation, be it through Science, English, Social Justice, Mathematics or Bible. French and Spanish, for example, not only teach students another language, but how to love their neighbour from a different culture and show hospitality by communicating in their language. This approach has enabled our students to succeed in university, college, trade school or on the job site. These diverse pathways inspire us to offer a wide selection of courses to honour the unique gifts and interests represented in our students.

Each student receives individual counselling and guidance to prepare for applications to their post-secondary institutions of choice.

Falcons Athletics

To be a Falcon is to embody…

Respect | Commitment | Gratitude | Encouragement | Growth

This extends to our student athletes, our families, our coaching staff and our fans. These embodiments encompass many areas of sport and what it means to be a part of a thriving community. We will represent our God, our school, our families and our team to our very best. This will allow us to model our school’s mission and vision through athletics.

Music

Secondary Campus Music
Our deep hope is that Surrey Christian School musicians embody, wonder, creativity, craftsmanship and humility, sharing beauty through music for restoring God’s world.

SCS Secondary Campus grades 8 – 12 musicians become fully alive in God’s story as they engage through music classes to be a joyful harmony and to voice together to glorify God in their lives and in the world by creating beauty through music. Our musicians are empowered to share their music within the school community and beyond, doing real work that meets a real need for real people.

Our Secondary Campus Music Department offers an exciting program for all grade levels:

The Concert Bands and Concert Choirs are the foundation of our music program where students work diligently together to create beautiful music and work individually to improve their skills and knowledge in music. Beyond participating in multiple concerts and festivals during the school year, music students perform for the residents of senior care homes in the BC interior and Vancouver Island. Grade 11 and 12 students have a bi-annual opportunity to tour internationally during spring break to experience the life and work of master composers.

Surrey Christian ROCKademy
The Grade 11 and 12 Rock Band and Junior Rock Band are unique music classes that offer an excellent opportunity for students who play guitar, bass, piano, synth or drums to learn, rehearse and perform this exciting but challenging genre of music. The course is scheduled during the regular timetable, and they have multiple rock festivals during the school year. Surrey Christian ROCKademy selects and performs music from the 60s to modern rock with themes that deal with social and political issues.

Java Men and Swing Girl
This Grade 10-12 Jazz Band meets twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00 – 4:30 pm to rehearse “big band” music in styles such as swing, Latin, funk and rock. Java Men and Swing Girl are busy with many performance engagements throughout the school year.

92nd Avenue
This Grade 10-12 Vocal Jazz group is an exciting, fun ensemble that rehearses and performs various styles of music such as jazz standards, Latin and pop — either with a rhythm section or a capella. 92nd Avenue meets once a week on Wednesdays after school.

SCStrings is a unique, extracurricular music program offered to SCS students that starts with the basics of learning a stringed instrument (violin or cello) and provides the opportunity to develop skills in an ensemble setting. The program teaches musical literacy, theory, technique and ensemble playing. This program runs once a week on Tuesday after school for the entire school year, and includes a minimum of two performances. All students are responsible to provide their own instruments; music is provided.

Drama

Drama is taught using the storyline of “Creating for the Creator and serving others”. We are meant to glorify God through our performances and use our creative gifts to entertain, challenge and teach our audiences. Students are encouraged to take creative risks on stage and build community through this art form.

From grade 8-12, students learn a variety of skills including sketch/scene work, mime, mask, stage combat, tableaux, and improv. Students are given the opportunity to perform for larger audiences in our seasonal Fine Arts Festivals and drama nights called Pacular Spectacular, and to see local plays at Pacific Theatre, Arts Club and Trinity Western University. Drama 11/12 students go on a retreat to Chehalis Healing House for a filming intensive.

Our annual main stage production is open to all students and usually involves a large cast and crew. Past productions include hilarious comedies (You Can’t Take it With You, Harvey), powerful dramas (The Crucible, The Outsiders), engaging Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet), energetic musicals (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) and in-house parodies (Hunger Games: The Musical).

Visual Arts

Visual Arts is taught from the perspective that we are created in the image of a creator-God who has created us to be creative. In grade 8-12 art classes we build on skills so that students graduate having experienced a wide variety of art mediums. One of our elective options includes an after school pottery class. Students learn art history and current visual culture in order to understand the story of art in the past and present. In January and June we host a Fine Arts Festival which showcases student artwork over the entire semester.

We explore many local galleries and the Art 11/12 class goes on an over night trip to Vancouver to explore the art and culture of the city in which we live. In addition, every two years during Spring Break, Art 11/12 students have the opportunity to spend a week in New York. All these experiences provide students a rich foundation with which to pursue the arts at a higher level, and we are proud to have many alumni who have gone on to do great things in the world of art.

Photography/Yearbook

Photography strives to teach students skills in photography and composition, and to use those skills to capture the beauty of God’s creation and the life of our school through curricular and extra-curricular activities. Using Photoshop and Lightroom, students learn to enhance their photos for display and print. This course is available for grades 9-12 and meets outside the regular timetable to allow students more time to exercise their talents.

The goal of the Yearbook course is to capture and compile our school’s story and create a lasting memory. Through photography, page design and theme integration, this team of hard-working students collaboratively build a 128-page yearbook that is then sold to our school community. Yearbook is open to those in grades 10-12 and meets at the same time as Photography.

Career Education

Career Education at SCS is comprised of two courses, Career Life Education and Career Life Connections, which are woven into several courses at each grade level. Our vision is for students to discover who they are, the opportunities that lie before them, and to reflect on who they want to become as a follower of Jesus being truly alive in God’s story. Using MyBlueprint students can explore, plan and document their career portfolios which culminates in their capstone project in their final career education class: Vocation and the Kingdom of God. Students get real experience participating in Career/Education fairs, visiting post-secondary schools and work experience preparation. They are also encouraged to further develop themselves through volunteer or service opportunities.

Microsoft Certification

Surrey Christian School is proud to offer official, internationally recognized Microsoft Office certifications. Our students have competed in the Microsoft Office World Championships numerous times. These exams allow students to demonstrate clear business impact, advance their skills and increase their chances in the hiring market. Available exams include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Word Expert and Excel Expert.

Student Support Services

Crew

Crew is a structure in which students and teachers come together in smaller groups on a regular basis. The purpose of the time together is to create a deep sense of belonging; all students are known, hear their name and receive the consistent message that we have important work to do that we cannot do without you.

Academic Counselling

We provide an extensive academic counselling service to our students which includes course planning and selection, intervention and assistance with course load/schedules, and transition planning for senior students for life after graduation. This includes presenting post-secondary options, guiding students through the application process, scholarships and award offerings, and eventual selection and enrolment into various programs. It is always exciting to see how our graduates want to use their strengths and gifts to make an impact on our greater community!

Counselling

Personal counselling is available for students at the SCS Secondary Campus 3 days per week. Students experience challenges in their lives about many things, including mental health, faith, academics, relationships, and planning for the future. They are invited to address these issues effectively in a supportive and safe context with the school counsellor.

Learning Support Services

We believe that all students are an integral part of our school community. Using an inclusive model, students are educated with their same-aged peers in regular classrooms to the degree that matches student ability and program needs.

Learning Support Services at Surrey Christian School help students through early intervention, curricular support, adaptations and modifications, developmentally appropriate support and parental involvement in program development.

Leadership

Our Leadership 11/12 storyline is creating a community in which everyone thrives.  This storyline is carried out through our deep hopes for the course in which

  • students will learn about themselves and grow further into who they are made to be
  • students will create a culture that empowers a sense of belonging, welcoming and acceptance.

Leadership students plan, promote and run intramurals, peer tutoring, peer counselling, school dances, school spirit weeks, Grade 8 Day and many other activities that contribute to our thriving community.

Food Studies

Food Studies will review basic culinary skills, understanding recipes and food safety. It will also challenge students to experiment with designing multi-course meals and more complicated dishes such as making homemade pasta, and baking and decorating cakes. Students will have the opportunity to cook in our professional Foods Lab for school events as well as visit a restaurant, cooking school and/or a food market. We will explore ideas about food justice, food traditions and food marketing.

Clubs & Programs

Falcons Motor Club

The Falcons Motor Club is comprised of a small group of students and a teacher who share a passion for mechanical things. In addition to hanging out and working in the shop, we also participate in high school drag racing at Mission Raceway. Our main race car is a 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 that has been worked on and raced by students since 2015.

Motor Club is about:

  • Learning: Develop knowledge and skills around mechanical things, tools, and problem-solving
  • Experience: Get hands dirty while being a part of something with a tangible, authentic result
  • Community: Connect across grades, with teachers outside of class, and with other people outside of our school community
  • Service: Use facilities, time, and knowledge to serve others

Language Partners Club

The Language Partners club is a vibrant group of international and domestic students who meet every other Wednesday. Through eating lunch together, playing games and doing other collaborative activities, this group builds cross-cultural friendships as well as social and language skills. Language Partners is always one of the liveliest places on campus!

Rock Climbing

Our Rock Climbing Team is part of Falcons Athletics.  The team is made up of grade 8-12 students who want to learn to climb and are willing to work hard to improve. The season runs from October to May with weekly practices and three indoor competitions, two locally and one on Vancouver Island. The team then finishes the year with an overnight outdoor climbing trip to Squamish.

Chapel and Assembly

As a school community we gather every other week and on special occasions to worship together and learn from each other. Chapels follow a liturgy of welcoming, singing together, and receiving a meditation/reflection of some kind, usually coinciding with the Christian calendar. Assemblies are topical, and could involve learning from each other about experiences happening in and out of the classroom, or hearing from guests coming from outside our community. All of our gatherings are closed with a blessing.

The Secondary Campus also has a small chapel space where individuals can gather for personal or group prayer and meditation. Teachers may take their classes here throughout the course of the year to gather in a contemplative setting when this is appropriate and necessary. Students are encouraged to use this space for Bible Study and prayer and to respect the nature of the space.

Intercultural Learning Trips

Part of engaging God’s world in the servant way of Jesus involves humbly discovering what God is doing in the world outside of our local and familiar context. SCS has developed relationships with sister schools all over the globe, and it is primarily through these relationships that we offer our Intercultural Learning Trips. We have teams of students who have visited Sierra Leone, South Africa, Honduras, Guatemala, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Nepal, and other regions in British Columbia.

Library Learning Commons

The Library Learning Commons is a flexible and communal space where learners are invited to inquire, discover and engage God’s world.
