Music Intermediate

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. Psalm 57: 7-1

The intermediate music program builds upon the musical foundation laid in the primary years, seeking to nurture in each student a life long love and appreciation for music. Throughout these years, students are encouraged to consider musical opportunities both inside and outside of the school community and to consider musical opportunities in high school and beyond.

While music education develops the whole child, music essentially connects us to each other and to the heart of God. At Surrey Christian school, we desire to help each student reach their full musical potential by developing musical skills and techniques that can be used to further develop the individual child, his or her relationship with God and to bless others. The heartbeat of the grades 4-7 music program is ‘Creating for the Creator, Blessing others’, with a strong emphasis on being intentional about using our musical gifts to glorify God and to bless others.

Music is a fair and glorious gift of God and our music is neither a means nor an end, but an offering and therefore an act of worship’

Students at Surrey Christian School are invited on a rich, exciting and vibrant journey of music making, creating, presenting and performing.

A great deal of community building takes place in the elementary campus as all students from grades 4 -7 fully participate in the music program. Starting in grade 4, students experience bucket drumming, recorder, choir and making their own instruments. Grade 5 students continue with bucket drumming, recorder and choir, then, in January they begin their band journey. Students in grade 6 & 7 start the school year off with ‘Band Camp’, an overnight camp where students receive tuition on their individual band instruments and full band rehearsals from specialists as well as Chapel time, team building activities, night games and a camp fire, to mention just a few highlights of this enriching time away! Throughout their grades 6 & 7 years at SCS, all students continue in the band and choir programs and are offered many extra curricular opportunities such as being part of a jazz band or vocal ensemble, to take a lead role in a musical and to serve in the music room as a Band-Aid (band assistant). Every year students in grade 4 – 7 have the option of serving in the Chapel Band. This team regularly leads the elementary school in worship during chapel.

Students in grades 4 – 7 are actively engaged in presenting and performing within and outside of the school community. Various instrumental and vocal groups have outreach opportunities throughout the year. As well as performances throughout the year in chapel, the highlights of the school year that involve the entire middle school, are a Christmas concert, a spring concert and a street parade at the end of the school year.

We welcome visitors to the music department any time! Feel free to join the fun by participating in a band class or a bucket drumming class, we have plenty of extra buckets and drumsticks!!
