Recently we wrapped up our “Belonging Project”. This project brought together mixed groups of grade 6 and 7 students and challenged them to discover how we create a sense of belonging in our community. This eventually led them to partner with a local organization they felt contributed deeply to our communities and to tell the story of that organization through the building of a bench. The benches are multi-purpose in that they give people a place to sit and encounter “the other” but they also serve to tell the deep hope of the group they were made for and to express our thanks for what these organizations do. Our deep hope as teachers is that these students have a greater understanding of what it means to have a sense of belonging.
